From the Schloss to the NeXus: The storyline of MIS

By Adrian Walch, Grade 6

How did the school change throughout the years? What were the major changes? What was the impact on the school campus and on the learning? What does this have to do with you?

The school was founded in 1966 by Christen DeHaan in Harlaching. Christen DeHaan is a German-American businesswoman and a philanthropist who leads the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO). The school moved to Percha in 1971.It was not such a big move. Approx.20 kilometers. It was founded to provide an education for all people around the world in Munich area.

Middle School I&S teacher Ms. Garcia has been at this school for 52 years. She has seen many changes, including buildings. But the biggest change, in her opinion, was when the school got iPads.

It changed, when the electronics came,” Ms. Garcia said. “We did not have to order textbooks, but the iPads.”

She also talked about how the ways of learning changed for the students.

“Vocabulary level has dropped, but that isn’t the school’s fault, but how the students engage in learning.” Ms. Garcia said. “Critical thinking also became harder for the students.”

Middle School teacher Mr.Crossley  has also seen a lot of changes. Not in the learning, but more how the campus changed. But, he also said that we lost a couple of things.

“The new library, the new FAB, we started the neXus, new Climbing frames and outdoor structures,” Mr. Crossley said. “Last year they made a new hardtop surface, new football pitch, the new planters. We lost the paddock field, the old gym, some trees.”

The Schloss (the only part of the school) in 1966.

So, almost everything changed. Even you changed. How you learn. If you would be living in 1966, going to school in 1966, the school would not be as great as it is now!
