Hello everyone,

The second semester has started and, while the weather in Amsterdam is still quite chilly, sun rays have been hitting the campus, making it come alive once again with students.

In this newsletter, we highlight upcoming application deadlines and events and inform you about a decision recently made by the Dutch government that has an impact on international student recruitment. We also point out some matters that are relevant to prospective students, such as student wellbeing at VU Amsterdam.

Feel free to reach out to your contact person at VU Amsterdam if you have any questions with regards to these subjects.

Best wishes,

Natascha Zwaan, Sharon Feijen, Sylvia van Glabbeek and Katerina Makri

Universities asked to suspend active international student recruitment

Recently, there has been much discussion in parliament about the recruitment of international students by Dutch (public) institutions, particularly due to the housing situation in the country, i.e. the extreme difficulty in finding accommodation.

The ministry has asked that institutions take their public responsibility. Thus, most (public) institutions will not be participating in (large scale) recruitment events and will all be individually re-evaluating all other upcoming marketing activities, including the use of study choice platforms, agents and online campaigns in January, February and March 2023. Institutions differ in their approach, with some cancelling ads, reducing or stopping investments in study choice platforms and/or reassessing their agent portfolio to further limit their (active) recruitment.

Note that, although VU Amsterdam cannot actively recruit international students at the moment, we still more than welcome students to pursue their degrees at VU Amsterdam.

We hope and expect further information from Dutch government by the end of March that will provide guidance on our international marketing strategies from April onwards. If you have any questions about the situation, please do not hesitate to get in touch with your contact person at VU Amsterdam.

It’s that time when your students search for summer programs that tap into their interests and begin the next chapter in their lives of aligning them with their future career goals.

At Boston University Summer Journalism Academy (BUSJ), students not only have an opportunity to have award-winning working journalists, they also have the chance to experience Boston University and the city of Boston.

For 15 years, Boston University College of Communication has offered this program to teach high school students in-person and virtually core skills in news reporting, interviewing, and writing, focusing on hands-on experience in and around Boston and their home communities.

Our photojournalism program taught by former Boston Globe photographer, Steve Haines, prepares students, like Taylor Coester  (a BUSJ alum and now a BU student), to work alongside journalists in capturing the best photo for their stories. Parents and students enjoy hearing that no third-party vendors are involved, and they can experience an authentic pre-college experience at a college on their list.

For students living on-campus, they have the opportunity to:

  • Meet with a Boston University’s representative to discuss the college admissions process
  • Explore what it’s like living in a residence hall and studying in a university environment
  • Experience Boston museums, historical sites, and neighborhoods during their free time

Students decide if they would like to attend our program in-person or virtually. Our three-week on-campus session starts June 26. Our two-week virtual sessions begin June 19, July 3, and July 17.

If you have a student who wants a real college experience this summer and wants to pursue a communication degree, encourage them to learn more by visiting www.summerjournalism.org and applying soon, as limited seats are available for our in-person and virtual sessions.

Linda,

This summer, Marist is offering more than 20 unique In-Person and Virtual Summer Pre-College programs, giving students the opportunity to earn three transferable college credits while they’re still in high school!

Some of our 2023 Summer Pre-College programs include:

  • Criminal Justice
  • Pre-Law
  • Fashion Merchandising

Please inform your students that the free application for 2023 Summer Pre-College is currently live! A complete application requires a personal essay, high school transcript, and recommendation form. Applications are reviewed on a rolling, space available basis per program.

In addition, our faculty are planning several Summer Pre-College Information Sessions for students to hear about the programs we offer, what our in-person and virtual pre-college experiences entail, and how to apply.

Encourage your students to learn more about this exciting opportunity to earn college credit, work with college faculty and experience life as a college student. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to our office at precollege@marist.edu or call (845) 575-3047.

Education Advisers Ltd would like to introduce you to Imperial College’s Global Design Space Challenge, 2023 Summer Course – the most exciting UK summer course and an absolute “must” for aspiring engineering undergraduates.

Please find a prospectus for the Global Space Design Challenge along with an electronic expression of interest form, which can be accessed here GSDC Expression of Interest Form – July 2023

This course is run at Imperial College, the UK’s leading science university and is ideal for the brightest UK and international students (age15-18), who aspire to study science or engineering at the world’s top universities.  It includes an intensive and professional programme of training by expert engineers and academics from Imperial, Oxford and industry-leading space companies. Students compete in teams to build the best community in outer space.

The course is perfect for students aiming for careers in space science, aeronautical engineering, robotics, or automation. They will experience an exciting, motivational, and competitive space design programme, learning and working with top academics from Imperial and Oxford.

The current UK buzz word in education is “Super-Curricular”. It’s now expected that a high ability student will go above and beyond the curriculum to demonstrate their love of subject and undertake independent study and research. The Global Space Design Challenge does all of that and more.

This 4 day / 5 night fully residential programme runs from 19th-24th July 2023. The cost for UK and EU students is £2195; and for Rest of the World students, the cost is £2695.

Greetings from the University of Chicago!

We are so excited to share a new summer program this year which would offer your students an opportunity to develop their math and science skills while familiarizing themselves with UChicago’s culture of inquiry and beautiful ivy-laden campus.

The Neubauer Phoenix STEM Scholars Summer Program is designed to eliminate barriers to entry that have surrounded STEM fields and help usher in a new generation of changemakers into these fields. This program invites rising high school seniors to campus for a one-week immersive program taught by world-class UChicago faculty, and provides access to college counseling, state of the art facilities, and other resources. The Neubauer Phoenix STEM Scholars program offers talented students an environment of collaborative learning, mentorship, and STEM-focused advising.

Not only will this program offer students tremendous insight and knowledge into college-level STEM courses, but it will also provide a chance to acquaint themselves with our College, our campus, and our community. The opportunity to live in and engage with a major city is one that can be perspective-changing for many summer scholars at UChicago. Chicago is the “City of Big Shoulders”— a city skyline carved by architects of the past and the present. This city is home to some of the most accomplished engineers, scientists, mathematicians, doctors, and inventors of our time. Our university stands on the shoulders of giants, bolstered by the achievements of the Chicagoans and UChicago scholars who came before us, and your students may someday share in these achievements.

If you’re interested in learning more about this opportunity or recommending it to a student, you can visit here. For additional questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to our Program Director, Nicole Mullen at ncmullen@uchicago.edu.
