Best Buns in Munich!

By Thalia J., Grade 9

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. That is something we hear quite a lot, especially as growing teenagers. But have you ever wondered what have, let alone what is the best? In this article, I will be ranking cinnamon rolls around Munich and letting you know what the best cinnamon rolls there that Munich has to offer. These 5 rolls will be ranked and scored based on a series of criteria such as texture, taste and flavour. Enjoy!

Cinnamood: Red Velvet Roll

For the first cinnamon roll, I will be ranking the popular destination Cinnamood! Cinnamood is located near Sendlinger Tor and offers a series of unique flavors such a Oreo all the way to Tiramisu rolls. For this trip, I picked the Red Velvet Roll, which you can see below.

For context, each roll will be ranked on categories from 1-10, 1 being repulsive and 10 being delicious.

This cinnamon bun was good but was not what I expected. For starters, the frosting is interesting because it is more of a cupcake frosting so it is quite sweet and considering the flavor is red velvet, I was hoping for the cream cheese frosting to be stronger. The dough was a similar case, it was really good, but I didn’t get a very strong red velvet taste. One thing I liked about the dough was it had a nice subtle oat taste which I enjoyed. While individually there is room for improvement, together, the really work well together and have a great taste, but they could be stronger in their flavours. My one issue with Cinnamood is that for the price, the portion could be a little more generous. The reason I gave the cinnamon roll a 7.5 is because it’s really tasty but there is room for growth. Jade J., Grade 9, said she agreed.

“The contrast between the flavours is really good and the dough is really nice and bready,” Jade said.

Addicted to Good – Blueberry Roll

The next place I will be reviewing is Addicted to Good located in Türkenstraße. While maybe not the most exciting interior, this place has some serious buns. Often time displaying their rolls in the shop window, you can expect to see mountains of frosting with jam pouring over it. For this trip, I got the Blueberry Roll.

I think what stands out about this cinnamon roll was the dough. Unlike some other rolls I have tried, this one has a very doughy texture to it, almost like bread. Also, the dough has the perfect level of sweetness which works well with the frosting. The cream cheese frosting is so light and fluffy and combined with the richness of the dough it is delicious. The blueberry jam is also nice because it adds freshness to the roll. I really enjoyed that the closer you got to the centre of the roll, the more jam there is. I think the portion size is generous for the price. My only issue with the roll is that it doesn’t keep very well because it will get a stale-like texture which isn’t great since it’s such a big roll. That is why I didn’t give it a full 10.

Dimpierre – Classic Roll

The third place I got a cinnamon roll from isn’t really a cinnamon roll place, but is actually a French bakery! For my third spot, I went to Dompierre in Munich and there I got a classic roll. If you do to here, I also recommend getting some other pastries apart from the rolls cause they have some great food.

Before I state my opinion, I just want to say that I think some of my issues with the roll is more of general issue and isn’t specific to the place. To start off, I think that icing was really good. I liked that it wasn’t to sticky and was really nice alongside the dough. Speak of dough though,  did have some issues with the dough. Now, I am unsure if this is because of the icing, but I have noticed that some rolls with have almost a stale texture on the outside and I haven’t really had this issue with rolls that have frosting instead. This for me was a bit of an issue because the roll itself was a bit small and therefore I felt like I didn’t really get to have the doughy part of roll which is in the center because it’s not very tall. However, when the dough wasn’t seemingly stale, it was really good so I feel like if I got more like that, my score would have been higher for the roll.

“ I love cinnamon rolls, especially when they are nice and fresh and the icing is melting because the roll is warm and the dough is soft and its like I am entering heaven,” said Libby B., Grade 9.

I think we can all agree with that statement Libby!
