In 6th Grade, Taylor Swift has anything but a bad reputation

By Michelle R. and Anna P., Grade 6

This year singer Taylor Swift has made one of the biggest comebacks in popularity among different age ranges. Many people have started to become more interested and become Swifties, even at MIS.

“She is now such a mega-star: Almost every generation knows her,” said Middle School EAL Teacher Ms. T.

Taylor has only grown in popularity since her self-titled album was released in 2006. Her fandom spiked when with the premiere of “1989”, her first pop album. And now she is touring the world with her Eras Tour, making headlines and selling out shows.

What does the MIS community think of Taylor? Only 1 out of 12 people interviewed at MIS did not have a fully positive opinion about Taylor Swift. How has this happened?

Ms. T, who is just two years older than Taylor, has been a loyal listener since her first album premiered in 2006. She said she can listen to Taylor Swift in any mood and when a new album or song comes out she will listen repeatedly.

“The thing about Taylor Swift is that she sings the same way that you feel,” Ms. T said.

Ms. T has been a teacher for about 5 years and has noticed huge changes in Taylor Swift’s popularity. She explained that even 1 year ago when she mentioned Taylor Swift to her English class, most students barely even knew her. When she played some of her popular songs like “Blank Space” or “Bad Blood” most knew them, but barely anyone knew Taylor Swift herself.

Ms. T said she was excited to hear about all new the new fans around the Middle School this year, since Taylor Swift has boosted her happiness, so seeing other people feel this way was nice.

One of nine 6th grade students had an opinion that wasn’t completely positive about Taylor Swift. Most of the students said that they liked her or that she was ok and listened to her daily or at least, had one song on their playlist. Even the only two male students interviewed had a positive opinion on Taylor Swift, which shows that she isn’t only for females.

According to students, Taylor Swift also plays a part in their family lives, like her songs being played in weddings.

” [Taylor] Is always nice to friends, fans and family,” Alice T., Grade 6, said.

Some people said they don’t listen to Taylor Swift, but still respected her as a musician.

“I appreciate everyone that loves listening to her,” Alicia P., Grade 6, said.

Some people think that the reason for her fame is her special relationship with her fans.

“I am mainly drawn to her music because of her lyrics, as well as her relationship and care for her fans, which shows the effect that she has on people and how it makes them feel,” substitute teacher Ms. Wardle said.
