Pink. That is one way to describe Barbie, the world wide hit that came out this summer.
Everything about the highly anticipated movie is why this movie was the best movie in the perspective of MIS Students.
“Everyone knew that was going to be the movie,” Josie B., Grade 9, said. “I saw a ton of other movies that I liked but, you can’t top Barbie.”
A few weeks ago, I took the liberty of asking my fellow students on the opinion of which movie was the best one. As suspected, most of them said Barbie while a couple others mentioned different movies such as Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse. Throughout the interviews, I asked what made this movie their personal favorite and a lot of the responses were similiar. They found Barbie to be the best movie because of it’s message. Barbie was promoted in a way that made it seem like it would just be a fun movie, and it certainly was, but I think a lot of students weren’t expecting it to be that meaningful, and not just for girls. The movie talked about sexism and patriarchy for both men and women, and I think that because of that, a lot of students could relate. While speaking to my peers, I picked up that a lot of them felt moved but that they didn’t overdue it with the discussions on feminism.
“What do you mean what does Barbie have to do with Feminism,” Josie said, “Barbie is feminism”
There is no denying that this was a fantastic movie, but we haven’t really discussed the soundtrack. During my interviews, I asked everyone what their favourite songs were from the movie. And even though I got a number of different answers from everyone, the ones that I heard the most where “What was I Made For” by Billie Eilish and “Push” The cover version by Ryan Gosling. What was I Made For was played during such an important scene which I think added to it a lot but it was also a moving song in general. During the scene, Barbie is realising that she doesn’t want to be stereotypical Barbie anymore. We see her shedding a tear as the beauty of life flashes before her eyes. She realizes all she’s missed out on. Push was a more contrasting song though but it added this fun element to it. The song was also performed by Ryan Gosling who did such a good job with it. Another note, the song was perfect for the movie because it’s about patriarchy and has sexist lyrics which is why it is so funny in the movie and adds the perfect touch.
At the end of the day, there is no denying that Barbie was made to be the best movie. It has all the essentials and I think I speak for everyone when I say that it certainly meet it’s standards.
