In the realm of MIS high school sports, Sebastian G., a 10th grader who has earned a spot on the varsity basketball team, demonstrates that his path to joining this elite squad is marked not only by his innate talent but also by his unwavering dedication, tireless effort, and unshakable self-confidence.

Sebastian’s journey to varsity basketball began with ambitious goals. When asked about his personal goals for the season, he showed clear goals for both his individual performance and the team success. He mentioned his drive to win tournaments against other international schools, like in SKIS, and compete in the German league, even though the players who play are older on average. Sebastian’s determination to contribute to the team’s success and his commitment to personal improvement show through his responses.

I hope to maybe be in the starting lineup at some point in the season”, says Sebastian.

When asked whether if he ever doubted his chances of making it to varsity, Sebastian replied that he believed he would make it. This belief in himself, combined with the talent around him during tryouts, filled his need to earn a spot on the team. It is clear that Sebastian has both the skills and the mindset required to be the best.

Although Sebastian shows willingness to be flexible, as when asked if he had considered trying out for the junior varsity (JV) team as a backup plan, he admitted that he would have played for JV if necessary. He even plans to train with the JV team occasionally to showcase his talent onto the younger players, so they can also make varsity.

I will probably train at JV on Fridays anyways from now and then”, says Sebastian.

He showed signs of joy when he found out he would make the varsity team, as he also found out that another 10th grader, Martin, along with him, made it onto varsity. He stated rather than competing against each other, they aim to succeed together. Their friendship extends beyond the court, as they not only play basketball together but also support each other’s growth and development, as they constantly play each other to build up and upgrade their flaws in their games.

When asked about the key factors that helped him secure his spot on the varsity team, Sebastian highlighted his shooting skills, speed, ability to finish plays, and strong free throw shooting. He also mentioned his dedication to improvement and having a good relationship with his coach. These factors have, without any doubt, contributed to his success.

“And I’m also improving every day and I’m and I know the coach as well, which is also helpful.”, says Sebastian.

For younger players with the same aspirations of making the varsity team, Sebastian had valuable advice. He said that the importance of staying consistent in your training and practice, not only during formal sessions but also at home or wherever they can find the opportunity. Additionally, he stated the important significance of having a strong mindset and belief in your own abilities.

Sebastian draws inspiration from two basketball legends, Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson. He admires Kobe’s “mamba mentality”, which consists of attacking what is in front of you with passion and purpose, without fear. Additionally, he looks up to Allen Iverson’s style of play. As a young and aspiring athlete, he hopes to replicate their success in his own basketball journey.

Sebastians aspirations go further than varsity high school. He dreams of earning a scholarship to play college basketball in the United States. While he acknowledges the challenges that stand ahead, his determination suggests that he will continue to follow his passion for basketball.
