A group of students decided to interview the candidates for the student council (9th grade) after the results came back to find out more about them and what they will bring to our school this year.
Jordans Run for Student council
By Tess C. and Sinead H., Grade 9
A vote seems like a fair way to determine who should be part of the student council, what does someone who lost the vote think about this?
At the start of this school year Jordan T. made the brave decision to run for student council grade representative. There were only three positions available, and he was not voted in. He lost by a mere 2 first place votes to the third placed candidate.
He has been attending this school for 6 years, since the 3rd grade and before that he lived in South Africa, so he has experience with this school.
In his free time, he is very involved in the athletics at MIS and has consistently won many awards for his cross-country and track competitions. From this, you can imagine that his main hobby is running, however he also said he enjoys cooking in his free time
“I’m a very good cook,” he said.
He also spends time together with his friends on the weekend. His favorite subjects in school are Math’s and Science which most students would not agree with.
When Jordan was asked how he felt about not winning, he said,
“Obviously it is disappointing, but I’ll still try run again next year.”
He is clearly hopeful of a second chance to run, which already shows a certain level of commitment. Jordan also said that the reason a position in the student council interested him was because it would have allowed him to make improvements to our school and advocate student views.
What did Jordan think of his fellow competitors? Jordan gave a simple response to justify Davids’s qualifications,
“Cause he’s David”.
Anyone who knows David, would understand this statement, however when prodded for more detail, Jordan stated that David is found to have great leadership skills and really connects with his peers.
Now for some tea on another selected candidate,
“Mischa??? *laughs* how do I even say this…. Like he talked s**t about the house events last year,” Jordan said. “He was unsupportive of events organized by the house captains, such as myself. And like, we put a lot of thought and effort into organizing events for all grades, just for him to downgrade all our work and make the activities appear boring to others. I just don’t think Mischa is very active in our school or interested in our school spirit.”
How will Mischa improve on this and increase the school spirit? His running for this position suggests that he may have changed his views since moving up to senior school.
Moving forward, Jordan was fully supportive of Marcelo running for the grade representative. He found that Marcelo made valid points in his video application and came up with some really good ideas for changing the student body, such as increasing school spirit, something the old Mischa was against.
“I’ll still try run again next year.”
With Jordan anticipating rerunning next school year, how is he going to guarantee himself a spot? What is he going to bring to this school which will make him unique? Will he advertise himself differently, becoming more engaged with students? He said he,
“Wanted to incorporate student body views and change the lives of people here at school.”
To do this, Jordan claims he will first start by improving his video, so that the student body can understand how he will succeed as representative.
Jordan T. will return in 2023.
